‘The Programme Gives Us Very Practical Knowledge’
Ziong Chung Hieu, from Vietnam, is the first year student of the ‘Economics and Politics in Asia’ Double Degree BA Programme which offers students a unique opportunity to pursue two degrees, one from HSE and one from Kyung Hee University. He originally enrolled in HSE’s Mathematics programme last year but soon realized that mathematics was not really close to his heart. Now, after switching majors, he is happy with his choice.
Ziong Chung Hieu was particularly attracted to the programme because he wanted to combine the study of Korean language and business and the programme offered this very option. ‘I didn’t know Korean before joining the programme so it’s quite a challenge for me to learn a new language. I have chosen this programme because of the opportunities that this programme gives to the students. Double diploma option guarantees that after graduation I can get two certificates of two different universities after only four years of studying.’
The biggest benefit of studying in HSE Moscow is the city itself. As there are a lot people from different countries and nationalities in Moscow, it is really fascinating to live here
As Ziong Chung Hieu notes, this gives students the opportunity to know other cultures better and to share their own. ‘Our programme is no different in that. Everyone is very nice and very curious about my background and at the same time they are ready to talk about themselves.’
‘What’s more, I like the city a lot,’ he adds. His favorite places are Park Kultury, Tretyakovskaya Gallery, Tverskaya Square, and VDNH. ‘What’s important for such a big city, Moscow’s transportation system, the underground in particular, is so fast that you can get to almost every place in Moscow quickly and cheaply.’ All students get a subsidized transport card that allows to save on transportation.
Studies
According to Hieu, the most interesting subject for him this year has been the Introduction to Political Science. ‘I really liked how teacher of this subject taught it. Ksenia Andruschenko managed to make this subject interesting, even though I did not like at first.’
‘When the 2nd semester started, the new subject appeared which is the most difficult for me— International Relations. This subject has a lot of theory that is a bit complicated for me to understand thoroughly. However, I try to cover it by reading our coursebook and extra literature, for example, Morgenthau's "Six Principles of Political Realism".’
‘I can say that the programme gives us very practical knowledge, which is great.'
The most interesting thing for me is quite a small number of students in the same year. This way, almost everyone knows each other, which makes the atmosphere very friendly, despite the competition for the top places on the student ranking
There is, however, one challenging aspect for Hieu and that is the small number of boys in Korean groups. ‘There are only 5 boys including myself, and somehow four of them are in one of Korean groups, while I am in a different one.’
Looking into Future
‘For the students who are choosing a university, I would recommend to start thinking about their future plans. It is essential to make it clear to yourself what you want from yourself and for yourself.’
Hieu’s future plan is to live in Korea and work there. He is convinced that Economics and Politics in Asia programme can help him achieve his goals. ‘I would like to be part of managing staff in business, as later on I can use that knowledge and experience to open my own business in my country, Vietnam.’
