'Moscow Seems Like a Totally Different World but I Feel Very Comfortable Here'
On July 21, students from Seoul National University presented their projects devoted to politics, economics and social sphere of Russia. Every year, within the framework of HSE Summer University, a group of South Korean students comes to Moscow to learn the Russian language and take 'Understanding Modern Russia' course. At the end of the course students prepare presentations based on the knowledge they have gained and their own research results.
HSE Welcomes First International Summer School ‘Inequality of Educational Opportunities’
In July 2017, the HSE Institute of Education welcomed its first international summer school 'Inequality of Educational Opportunities'. Organized by the IOE International Laboratory for Education Policy Analysis, this event aimed to promote best-practice approaches to inequality research through multi-dimensional academic debate and learning about today’s advanced methodology in social data analysis.

On July 21, 2017, the graduation ceremony for the Preparatory Year programme was held. During the ceremony, more than 170 students from 40 countries received their diplomas, which will enable them to continue their studies in Russia.

Researchers Uncover How to Boost Learning Efficiency in Neurofeedback Paradigm
Researchers from the HSE Centre for Cognition & Decision Making and the Control of Complex Systems Laboratory (Russian Academy of Sciences) have conducted a series of experiments to uncover what a person actually controls when they are tasked with independently affecting the activity of their own brain. This discovery may help develop non-pharmacological methods for treating epilepsy, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and depression.
Ambassadors for Interdisciplinary and Applied History
Samrat Sil is a recent graduate of the English-taught Master's programme in Applied and Interdisciplinary History ‘Usable Pasts’ at HSE St. Petersburg. David Datmar, a native of Ghana, decided to join the programme to help him prepare for eventual study at the PhD level, which he plans to undertake soon at the University of Oxford. Both gentlemen were recently awarded certificates of recognition for their role as ambassadors contributing to the university’s internationalization agenda.

HSE Researchers Receive a Grant to Search for New Physics
A team of researchers from the HSE Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) has won a contest held by the Presidential Research Funding Programme. Researchers with the laboratory are developing a system of algorithms that will help physicists look for new particles in the Large Hadron Collider.

Lawyers in the Digital Era: Will Artificial Intelligence Replace the Legal Profession?
The 6th International Summer School on Cyber Law has come to a close in Moscow. The event was organized by the HSE International Laboratory for Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law. The school is conducted in English. Young researchers from Austria, Belarus, Germany, Great Britain, India, Mongolia, Spain, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine presented their papers at this annual event.

HSE School of Cultural Studies Designs Khrushchyovka Museum
The HSE School of Cultural Studies has designed a museum dedicated to the Soviet-era apartment complexes called Khrushchyovka buildings. The plans of the museum were presented at a meeting held by the Russian Ministry of Culture in Tsarskoye Selo. Under the guidance of cultural studies Associate Professor Irina Gluschenko, undergraduate and post-graduate students began working on the project long before the topic of citywide building renovation became part of public discussion in Moscow.
HSE’s Best Teacher Results Announced
The Best Teachers 2017 competition at HSE recently reached its completion. Although the overall procedure this year was the same as it was in 2016, the financial terms changed – the bonuses for the winners have been increased. Vadim Radaev, First Vice Rector of HSE, told us about the vote and some of the perks for all of the winners.

HSE Invites Alumni to Work on New Academic Projects
Our University is launching the HSE Alumni Academic Fellowship Competition. This project provides support to visits by HSE graduates and alumni to their alma mater to conduct lectures and workshops, participate in meetings of the HSE International Advisory Committee, and oversee research assistants for the purpose of carrying out projects and preparing joint publications.
