On March 18, the Older Generation Support Centre opened at HSE University. HSE News Service continues to interview students and employees of the university who are helping senior citizens through the difficulties of self-isolation by delivering medicine and food, sharing useful information, and holding online classes. Today, volunteers who teach foreign languages to pensioners speak about how they have become volunteers.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which was announced in March, is not winding down anytime soon. The coronavirus is especially dangerous for senior citizens. Due to the threat of infection, older Muscovites are spending their days in self-isolation. But many HSE students are working to ensure Moscow’s elderly don’t get too lonely by communicating with them remotely.

The HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge (ISSEK) has presented data about the current conditions in which Russia’s schools and universities must now transition to online learning. According to their data, only 11.4% of university instructors with a PhD (or Doctor of Sciences degree) used online tools in their teaching in the last year.

The Armensky Annual Inter-University Research and Technology Conference has concluded at MIEM HSE. Out of 200 submitted papers, 32 works by high school, undergraduate and graduate students participated in the event. The HSE News Service has prepared an overview of four HSE student-led projects that were awarded first-class diplomas.

The first admissions period for HSE’s doctoral programmes continues. The PhD programme in Economics is one of the programmes still accepting applications. Doctoral candidates of the programme have the opportunity to defend their dissertations before the specialized dissertation council and receive a PhD from HSE University.

If one of the HSE teams wins the regional level competition, it will advance to the Challenge’s global level competition. HSE News Service spoke with HSE students about how the local round went.

Classes in the Master of Data Science programme have recently begun. This is the first Master’s programme in Russia taught entirely online on Coursera global educational platform. All classes are conducted in English.

Students who wish to compete in the Statistical Learning Theory Olympiad held jointly by HSE University and Skoltech may apply until March 16. Winners of the Olympiad automatically gain admittance to the joint HSE-Skoltech Master’s Programme in Statistical Learning Theory. HSE News Service spoke with last year’s winners about their experience competing in the Olympiad and now studying in the joint programme.
